John William Carson was an American television host, comedian, writer, and producer who died on January 23, 2005.

He is well known for his tenure (1962–1992) as host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Carson won a 1985 Peabody Award, the Governor’s Award from the Television Academy in 1980, and six Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 1987, he was enshrined in the Television Academy Hall of Fame. In 1992, Carson was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 1993, he was honoured at the Kennedy Center. Carson fought in the Navy during the Second World War. Carson began working in radio after the war. He switched from radio to television and took over as Tonight’s host after Jack Paar.

Carson became an American icon in the 1970s despite the fact that his show was already popular by the end of the 1960s. This was the case even after his retirement in 1992.
