A double-decker behemoth known for its $1 fares has a new moniker in the District: The Capital City Bus.
Megabus unveiled the new bus and emblem, an artistic rendering of the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool, at a Union Station ceremony Thursday morning. D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton was on hand for the renaming ceremony.
The bus was renamed as part of a “Name the Bus” campaign launched this summer in the 33 states served by the express bus company, in addition to the District. Customers were invited pick a name that paid homage to a distinctive feature or historical attribute of the area served.
Other winning names included: “The Chesapeake Bus” (Maryland), “The Old Dominion Bus” (Virginia) and “The Big Cheese Bus” (Wisconsin).
“By naming a bus ‘Capital City,’ megabus.com has recognized the District of Columbia, its residents, and our civic franchise as a major national and international tourist destination,” Norton said in a news release. “Megabus.com’s discount bus service has encouraged thousands of people from across the nation to visit D.C., and has allowed our residents to journey to a wide variety of cities. Our work to make Union Station a hub for megabus.com and other buses has been vindicated by the increase in bus riders who now wait in comfort to board buses.”
Megabus said the bus will travel all routes that serve D.C. The bus, which departs from Union Station, takes passengers from Washington to 20 destinations, including Philadelphia, New York and Toronto.
